In
1951, as a young boy accompanying his father, Dave Southworth visited
the ghost town of Ironton, Colorado. Most of the original buildings
were intact, yet Ironton had no residents. This site, possibly more
than any other, spurred his interest in the gold and silver mining
camps that were established during the late nineteenth century.
Many of the cities and towns that played an important part in the
mining boom have been inhabited continuously since they were established.
Conversely, there are some in various stages of collapse, and many
that have totally disappeared. Dave has traveled several thousand
miles to visit the sites of these camps across the West. He has
four-wheeled, dirt biked, and journeyed on horseback to the most
remote settlements in the high country. This interest, coupled with
his passion for firearms, were the catalyst for many books on the
Old West. Dave won awards as a teenager shooting at his local police
pistol club. The lawlessness of the post-Civil War period is one
of Dave's specialties. He always strives to present the authenticity
behind the individuals and events that are so much a part of American
frontier folklore. Few historians know their subjects as well.
A
new release, Famous Gunfights of the American West, is more than
400 pages of the grit and daring of such gunfighters as Jesse James,
The Dalton Gang, Billy the Kid, Bill Doolin, Doc Holliday and the
Earp brothers. Their exploits, as well as those of many others,
inspired captivating stories that are a fascinating part of early
American history.
Dave
Southworth has compiled an impressive list of interesting books,
videos and audio books on the fields of his expertise. Twelve years
of extensive research in Colorado resulted in the publication of
Colorado Mining Camps. This book presents 207 communities that were
significant in the Colorado mining boom. It is considered by many
to be the "Bible" on the subject. Colorado Gold Dust: Short Stories
and Profiles was Dave's first book. It was released in 1995 and
was the first publication of Wild Horse Publishing.
Wild
Horse Publishing was established to bring the writings of Dave Southworth
to the reading public. The Western History Collection includes all
of Dave's work with the exception of two new books: Franklin Hall,
a novel, and Rhymes of a Storyteller, a mixture of fiction and non-fiction
set to verse. We invite you to review all of our highly informative
selections. Thank you for your interest.
